Friends and Phone Calls

Ava spent an hour looking over the Mays case again. She stared at the crime scene photos and the still shots from the security footage while she halfheartedly ate lukewarm beef stew she had dumped from a can. It wasn’t very good, but it was something to eat that she didn’t have to think about or put much energy into fixing.

Her phone rang while she was making a preliminary list of questions for interviewees that she didn’t even have names for yet.

“Ashton,” she said. “I hope it’s good news. I don’t think I can process bad news right now.”

“It’s news. I don’t know that you will consider it good, but it’s news.”

“No one pinged in the system, did they?” She scowled at the group shot on the table.

“Not a single one. I don’t think the images are clear enough, but I’ll help you figure out who each person is, if you want.”

“That would be terrific.”

“The receptionist who made the 911 call was Pat Smythe. I got that already from the records. Want her address and number?”

“Ashton, have I told you lately that you are a guru?” She grabbed a pen and flipped the photo over to write on the back of it.

“Did you check to see if anyone else used that alley?” Ava asked.

“I did. No one else even went near it.”

“Thanks again.”

“Yep. Talk later.”

He disconnected before Ava could tell him to have a good evening, or that pulling the records from New Beginnings’ computer system had been a great idea.

“I told him he was a guru,” she told the panic-stricken faces in the photo. “That should do for a week or so.”

Kenna Underwood, Pat Smythe, Dr. Ted Coolidge, Dr. James Allen, Dr. Travis Hall, Tia Gundersen, Felicity Good, Preston Hyder, and Ted Sims agreed willingly to go to Ava’s office the next day for interviews concerning the murder. Randy Tittle and Rosa Diaz had been patients of Dr. Coolidge and Dr. Allen that day, but both had only recently recovered from light anesthesia and couldn’t recall seeing or hearing anything. All either of them remembered was being ushered out of the building in wheelchairs by the assistants and doctors. It would do little good to interview them, but Ava scheduled them for a later date anyway. She had to check off all the boxes.

Norah’s list of friends was not much shorter than her husband’s. Some of the names were on both lists. They were a popular couple. From what she imagined from all the files and information, they had lived quite a charmed life, which was proof positive to Ava that no matter what
